What's in a Name?
Boulder
Boulder was originally named “Conor” by his initial “human momma.” She knew what kind of fight he had in him and saw it for her own eyes as she worked tirelessly to help him get through the illness pink eye brings and to ensure he was well on his way to recovery. Once Jaime adopted him, she renamed him Boulder, a name that came almost immediately to mind. But this name has a little more explanation behind it than the others.
In Matthew 16:13-18 we find,
“Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.” He *said to them, “But who do you yourselves say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. ‘NASB
In this passage we find some incorrectly identifying Christ as only a prophet. Although many prophets had special powers and were revered greatly, Peter knew that someone greater had come. Peter identified Jesus correctly as the Son of the Living God. Now, let’s take a look at Jesus’ response. The three words we will focus on are in bold.
“Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. ‘
In Greek:
-
“Peter” is Πέτρος (petros) –stone or rock
-
“rock” is πέτρᾳ (petra)-mass of rock or boulder
-
“Hades” is ᾅδου (hadou)- dwelling place for the unbelieving deceased (often referred to as “hell,” but probably incorrectly since final judgment has not yet been pronounced by God)
In this passage we find Peter proclaiming the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus’ response was that Peter/ Πέτρος/stone or rock had identified the very πέτρᾳ/mass of rock or boulder that the church would be built upon (JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF THE LIVING GOD). A church so powerful that the gates of “Hades” could not overpower it. Who has power over death? Jesus Christ, the son of the living God. Now He is a massive boulder who has power over death itself!
Boulder loves lovins’. He loves oatmeal cookies, scratches under his chin and around his ears, neck hugs, brushing, and just company in general. He has several nick-names: Little-bitty black cow, Bubby, & Kale. When referring to Boulder and Beauty together we often refer to them as Kale and Tofu or Oreo.
Beauty
- Beauty was named such because of the initial reaction of seeing this sweet little wide-eyed white “beauty” standing in the horse trailer as the doors opened up. Beauty loves running, skipping, bucking, head-butting, mooing, being nosey, eating cookies, napping, chasing Chip, and just life in general.
She has several nick-names: Pretty-girl, Snow-white, & Tofu. When referring to Beauty and Boulder together we often refer to them as Tofu & Kale or Oreo.
Blaze
This was the name given to our rescued Mustang by Jaime once she decided to adopt him. His original name given by Kentucky Humane Society’s Willow Hope Farm was “Ziggy” because he had a zig-zag stripe down his face when he was a foal. As you can see in the pictures, he now has a very distinct white blaze down his face. The name is fitting for this reason, but also because of the mental notion of seeing wild Mustangs blazing a trail across the land, wild and free. Blaze is a cautiously friendly fellow who responds very well to training.
He has several nick-names as well: Blazey, Watch-horse, Bubby, Gentleman, etc. When referring to Blaze and Breeze together we may call them Boys, Gentlemen or Brothers.
Breeze
This was the name given to our rescued Standardbred by Kentucky Humane Society’s Willow Hope Farm. It fits Breeze “ to a T.” He is fun-loving, easygoing, and just enjoys life in general.
He has many nick-names: Easy Breezy, Chester the Pester, Bubby, Gentleman, etc. When referring to Breeze and Blaze together we may call them Boys, Gentlemen or Brothers.
